Being able to swim is a important life skill for everyone to learn. Once you're able to swim you can enjoy regular visits to the pool during term time as well as holiday fun with friends both in the UK and abroad.

Across all of the pools we manage, over 63,000 children are learning to swim each week, all gaining a valuable life skill. Whether it's building water confidence in babies and toddlers or teaching grandparents how to swim, we have something for everyone. If you’d like to learn more about our learn to swim programme, then do give us a call on 01202 877468 or email us at enquiries@ferndownleisurecentre.co.uk.

Swimming Lessons

Our lessons follows the Amateur Swimming Association's (ASA), Learn to Swim framework.  This uses fun and games to take children from the first splash to full competence in the pool and will ultimately help your child develop confidence in the water.
The ASAs Learn to Swim Programme guides your child through ten clearly defined stages.  All of the ASA Learn to Swim Programme is supported by the Kellogg's ASA Awards scheme.

Reflecting our commitment to continuously improving the delivery of swimming lessons, we have invested in the latest technology to record the performance of children during their lessons.

Through an internet based Home Portal parents/guardians will be able to access information about your child’s swimming lessons including:

  • Your child’s performance against the key competencies for their course level E.g. Swim 100m efficient backstroke.
  • A rating from the teacher on how they are doing against this competency E.g. Needs practice / Fair / Good
  • Notification of when your child is ready to move up a level and the ability to choose from the available times for your child to move into
  • Record of all assessments and pass dates for each level

Swim Lesson Customer Experiences and Successes

1st October 2015

We have been extremely happy with the tuition Patrick has received and are pleased with how confident he is for his age!

2nd October 2015

I would like to say how impressed I am with Jo's teaching, Jennifer will miss her.

2nd Jan 2016

Many thanks particularly Fiona who has been outstanding in teaching my daughter to swim.

March 2016

My daughter Zoe has completed her gold level 3 award at Rookies with you recently. She has thoroughly enjoyed the 2 years at the club and is looking forward to getting professional qualifications in lifesaving as soon as she is 16.

16th March 2016

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the swim teachers involved in helping Rebbecca reach this milestone (as with sister Hannah, to Jane in particular).

May 2016

Following Ben's taster sessions with Poole Swimming Club last week he has decided that he would like to join the club. Therefore, please can you take this as cancellation of his swimming with Ferndown

He's had a great time learning with the teachers at Ferndown and as you know has stayed well beyond achieving his stage 10. Thank you to all the teachers and staff.

July 2016

Sunny has had a brilliant time learning to swim and perfecting her strokes. Your
teachers are excellent. I can still remember a toddlers session with you where
they all tried to scramble onto the big float. We recently went to Crete for a
week and we swam every day yet she still wanted me to whizz her around in the
pool singing "three little men in a flying saucer"!!!

23rd August 2016

I just wanted to pass on how sorry I am to hear that Sarah is reducing her teaching hours. Both of my children have enjoyed being taught by her and she has always been lovely and very approachable from my point of view.
She communicated well with me as a parent at drop off/pick up whilst still keeping her classes running on time. I hope she increases her hours again at some point in the future and we will miss her. Can you please pass on our best wishes.

Adult Swimming

If you have a fear of the water, can’t get your face wet or panic just thinking about the deep end then it’s easy to think swimming is not for you.

But if you learn to swim you can have fun in the water with your friends, children and grandchildren. You can also make a splash in the water while on holiday.

The important thing to know is that you are not alone. One in five adults across the country can't swim - but it's never too late to learn. We offer adult classes in a friendly and supportive environment.

The best thing to do is contact us for information on lessons for all ages.

If you are unsure about starting lessons, ask if you can watch a class or two to get a better idea of whether it's for you, or ask to speak with one of the teachers.

Most lessons take things at a slow pace - starting off with teaching you how to stand up and regain your feet, float and swim without fear before being taught specific strokes.
