Chris' Story

GP Referral Scheme.

"When I started the exercise referral scheme, I was walking with two crutches following a stay in hospital. 10 weeks on, I no longer need the crutches and feel a lot more confident"

"In April 2012, following sever back pain, I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Aftersurgery and a two week stay at Hurtswood Park, I left hospital struggling to walk with the help of two crutches. I had always been very active - running around after my two children, playing badminton and dancing. Finding myself in the situation where I could barely walk was very hard.

I had some physiotherapy at home and was then referred to Sharni at The Triangle, through the GP Referral Scheme. The tumour and surgery had affected my balance and left me very weak. Sharni's aim was to strengthen my muscles, which in turn would improve my balance and to work on my stamina.

Sharni suggested a number of exercises in the pool at the Health Club. I had some doubts that I would even be able to get in the pool but Sharni persuraded me that with the water aiding my balance, I would feel quite stable. This was definitely true and I found myself enjoying the sessions and the ability that the water gave me. The exercises helped my muscle strength too and I felt a lot more confident about walking. I was able to manage with one crutch for many months and then I stopped using that after about a year.

Sharni has introduced me to some of the equipment in the gym and I now regularly use the gym and the pool. When I first met Sharni, I walked with two crutches. Through the GP referral scheme and with Sharni's help and encouragement, I am now able to walk with no crutches and feel a lot more confident."
