Charity Fundraising

Swimathon is the UK’s biggest swimming event that sees thousands of people taking the plunge at hundreds of pools around the country to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care or Sport Relief.

The nationwide swimming challenge encourages swimmers up and down the UK to take part in a variety of distance events at their local pool. Challenges are designed to suit all levels of fitness, abilities and ages and participants can choose to take part as an individual or as part of a team.

We have been proud supporters of Swimathon since 2007 raising a total of £1,341,578.54 to date. In 2014, 56 of our swimming facilities participated in the event raising a total of £186,972.41 with over 2,300 members of their local community taking part. Elmbridge Xcel Leisure Complex, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey was ranked our best fundraising facility recruiting over 145 swimmers and raising £13,450.64.

Swimathon is one of our largest charity events and is a driver for increasing participation by current centre users and is a key tool in the recruitment and retention of new swimmers. This helps to achieve our aim of ‘Creating Active Places and Healthy People’.

We received sponsorship in the form of incentives from Zoggs International Limited and Limelight Sports Limited (organisers of Swimathon), a reflection of our commitment to the campaign over the last few years. The incentives aim to motivate staff to increase their swimmer participation figures.

Darren Lovelock, UK Sales Manager at Zoggs International Limited said:

“We are delighted to support the Swimathon campaign as it is an invaluable campaign and it is a great fit with the Zoggs brand underlining our work with the swimming communities.

Duncan Goodhew, MBE, Olympic gold medallist and London 2012 Ambassador, is the President of Swimathon. Duncan inspires swimmers by providing training programmes to help participants maintain and achieve their goals, tips on setting fundraising targets and advice on the best swimming techniques not only for the event but for maintaining an active lifestyle for the future. Duncan said:

"Swimathon provides motivation and a personal challenge to swimmers nationwide. It also offers a goal to train for, a target to achieve and a great cause to support.”

We are also proud to be donors of Diabetes UK and supporters of  Heart UK - the Cholesterol Charity.

At local level we encourage our sites to work with local stakeholders and there are many examples ranging from support of Mayors’ charities to individual members of our communities and our centres undertaking inspiring fund raising activities.
