ACTIVE PLACES, ACTIVE PEOPLE, ACTIVE PARTNERSHIPS

Partnership working remains at the core of our commitment and is summarised in our mission ‘to create active places and healthy people’. Since becoming a social enterprise, we have expanded our Business Development capability to meet the increasing flow of new tenders from local authorities as they look to save money and keep their leisure facilities open during these austere financial times.

In January 2014, we were appointed to design, build and manage Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council’s new £13.5 million leisure centre, replacing the current 40 year old facility. Councillors selected Places for People to operate and maintain the facility for a 20-year period in partnership with the Council. The centre will be state of the art, hosting a wide variety of facilities yet it will be significantly cheaper to operate than the old facility. Building work commences in the Summer and is scheduled to open to the public in 2015.

In partnership with Norwich City Council, we were appointed to manage Riverside Leisure Centre in March 2013.

The initial investment programme has now being implemented, offering brand new fitness equipment, refurbished changing rooms, new sauna and steam rooms, a new swimming pool safety system and decoration throughout the leisure centre. The site has also benefitted from new front of house IT and telephone systems as well as a new website. Following these initial improvements, the group exercise class offering has been increased and updated to breathe new life into the site’s exercise studio.

November 2013 saw a 10-year contract with Mole Valley District Council commence taking over the operation of Dorking Sports Centre. A wet and dry facility, the refurbished sports centre opened to the public in January 2014 and boasts a six-court sports hall, 25 metre pool and toddler splash pool. A dedicated group cycling studio and brand new gym equipment from Precor, Technogym and Escape was installed as well as refurbishing and rebranding the café.

We are proud to have been re-awarded a 15 year contract with our partners Suffolk District Council which started on 1 April having worked with the Council managing their 4 leisure facilities since 2004.

Another contract which starts today is with Newport Pagnell Town Council. This 15 year contract will see over £1m of capital investment featuring a new purpose build gym extension as well as a refurbishment of other areas within the facilities.

We are also at final tender stage at York PPP, Maldon, Vale of White Horse/South Oxford and Scarborough as well as on the select list at Ryedale, Wyre Forest PPP and Wandsworth. So thanks to our social enterprise status we have another very busy year ahead as more and more contracts are coming to the market place, a prospect we relish!

Finally, extending of our leisure management contracts has always been important to us as we are very keen to continue our successful partnerships with our clients. Again, over the last 12 months thanks to our social enterprise status, we have been very successful in extending a number of our contracts providing better value to our clients.
