Naming Ceremony Takes Place at Multi-million Pound West Bromwich Leisure Centre

Representatives from Sandwell Council, DC Leisure and Sport England joined the Mayor of Sandwell and local school children at a recent naming and Topping Out ceremony for West Bromwich Leisure Centre.

As 2013 drew to a close, a naming and Topping Out ceremony took place for the £11 million leisure centre in West Bromwich. DC Leisure has managed the design and build of the new facility, which is due to open to the public in the summer of 2014.

The leisure centre, which will be managed on behalf of the council by DC Leisure, includes a 25m swimming pool, learner pool, sauna and steam room, four-court sports hall, 100-station fitness suite, two dance studios, indoor cycling studio, indoor children’s adventure play centre and cafe.

Peter Kirkham, Development Director says: “We’ve worked for over six years to develop affordable leisure centres across the UK. This build is a great example of what can be done when the local council has the courage and enthusiasm to make a difference.  We are confident that when the finished building opens next summer it will exceed all expectations and attract 600–700,000 users per year.”

Councillor Steve Eling, Sandwell's deputy leader, spoke at the ceremony. “Partnering with DC Leisure was an innovative first for the council. If you look at this new build in the context of sports centres and pools closing it took a tremendous leap of faith for the council to invest in this facility.

“Pools across the UK are closing because they are grossly inefficient and councils cannot afford to maintain them. What we have here is a mixture of facilities, design and procedures that will mean the centre is sustainable for the future.  Today is an important milestone for West Bromwich and Sandwell in continuing to provide excellent sport and leisure facilities for the residents of the borough to enjoy.”

Also attending the event was Kevin Mills, Strategic Lead Capital Projects and Facilities, Sport England. "The West Bromwich Leisure Centre project is an impressive example of organisations working together to achieve a great outcome and we hope to share this as a best practice example for local councils after it opens next summer.

“Sandwell Council has taken sound strategic decisions in investing in its sports facility provision, and appointed a strong project team with DC leisure, alongside design team Robert Limbericks and construction partner Pellikaan, working to deliver a high quality but value for money centre. It’s a challenging site but the team have developed a cost effective solution which will provide a great community sport facility.”
