Quit4Life, Hampshire’s NHS stop smoking service, has partnered with River Park Leisure Centre and Winchester City Council to offer an exciting new free course for smokers who want to quit cigarettes and get active.

The brand new Quit & Get Fit course starts on 7th June here at River Park Leisure Centre and will offer local people the chance to receive free specialist help to stop smoking as well as a taster exercise each week led by a qualified instructor.

Participants will be able to receive nicotine replacement therapy, or a voucher for a vaping starter kit, alongside Quit4Life’s NHS support to stop smoking. Plus, every week the group will have the opportunity to try a new activity at the centre – such as swimming, cycling or table tennis – for free.

Norma Jane Beckwith, Quit4Life’s specialist smoking cessation adviser who will run the course, said: “I am excited to be combining our support and therapies for smokers with the opportunity to try out a variety of new fun activities. We have already experienced the benefits of similar programs running in Hampshire but this is something new again. This is a great opportunity for any smokers in or near Winchester that are thinking of quitting and wanting to have a laugh along the way. I am very much looking forward to meeting my new group!”

Many smokers fear putting on weight when they stop smoking, so by staying active it can not only help to curb cigarette cravings but can also keep you looking and feeling healthier when you go smoke-free. What’s more, by giving up smoking in June the average smoker can save around £2,000 in time for Christmas!

A recent participant at Quit and Get Fit in Basingstoke said: I really enjoyed every session and very much look forward to coming along again each week. We have a really nice group and it will be great to get to know each of them over time. I not only feel better for quitting smoking but I feel much fitter too!”.

Quit & Get Fit at River Park Leisure Centre starts on Thursday 7th June at 4pm and will run for 8 weeks. To book your place on this free course call Quit4Life on 01252 335 120, or email quit4life@nhs.net.
